Vegetarian Food by MRT Station

Hunting for vegetarian food in Singapore?

This list is not intended to get you to the best vegetarian food around.
It is intended to bring you to the nearest vegetarian food (or vegetarian-friendly food), whichever train station you might be at.

The nearer the eatery to the station, the higher up the list it will be.
All the places are accessible by foot, 20 minutes' walk maximum.

I've only provided minimal information. Please look up the rest on the internet.
Hungry Ang Mo's blog is pretty informative.

This list is still new, and will be updated as I fish up, uh, veggie up, more places to eat at.

Hunting for Vegetarian Food in Singapore

I am going to share with you some advice on finding vegetarian food in Singapore.
I'm not very strict (yet) with my vegetarian diet, so pseudo-vegetarian options will also be included.
Take it with a pinch of MSG yeah?

Basic Rules: Vegetarian food tends to be Chinese vegetarian cuisine, or Indian vegetarian cuisine, or western style cuisine, or fusion type food (and probably feel-good organic) with a mix of everything.
Chinese vegetarian cuisine might be a little heavy on the mock meat sometimes. Might not be a good idea if you are gluten-allergic. My personal recommendation is mock fish and mock mutton.
Chinese characters for vegetarian (food): 素(su), 斋/齋(zhai, the former is the simplified character, the latter the traditional character)

Hawker Centres
Hot, steamy, not the most hygienic of places. People put up with it for the quality of the food, and the price. You can usually find at least one Chinese vegetarian stall. Do note that Chinese vegetarian stalls at the hawkers' tend to close well before dinner time, like 3pm maybe.
You can also pick rice and veggies from Indian stalls. They usually keep the veggies and meat separate, unlike in Chinese cuisine where you might find tons of tiny dead anchovies or shrimps fried together with veggies.
Which brings me to my next point. "Vegetable rice" is NOT vegetarian. It simply means rice with dishes/accompaniments.

Food Courts
These are air-conditioned and (sort of) cleaner versions of hawker centres.
Uuuumm, maybe about 60% of food courts have one Chinese vegetarian stall.
Again, if there isn't one, try the Indian stall or the western stall (pasta etc).

Eateries with Vegetarian Options
Some non-vegetarian eateries are considerate enough to include some vegetarian (or "no meat") choices in their menus.
  • Pastamania
  • Soup Spoon
  • Laksania... etc

Pseudo-Vegetarian
Not so explicitly vegetarian but, you can't see the meat anywhere. The sauces might have hidden meat, but if there are no better choices, then this might be the next meal.
  • Subway
  • any salad joint
  • sushi from the supermarket

If All Else Fails...
  • vegetarian cup noodles from the supermarket or convenience store
  • fruits from hawkers', food court, or supermarket

Hotels in Singapore with Vegetarian Restaurants

As far as I know, there are three hotels with vegetarian restaurants within its premises.
I'll be adding and editing this list if I discover more.
I realize all of them serve Chinese cuisine.

Southeast Asia Hotel
www.seahotel.com.sg
Nearest MRT station: Bugis
Rooms at SGD100-SGD130.
The most budget of the three hotels, Kwan Im Vegetarian Restaurant is at the first floor, facing out.
Fortune Centre (a building chock full of veg food) is just three doors away.

Hotel Royal @ Queens
www.royalqueens.com.sg
Rooms at SGD170-SGD360+
Nearest MRT station: Bras Basah (with Cityhall, Bugis & Dhoby Ghaut some distance away)
Graces Court Cuisine Pte Ltd is on the second level. http://www.gracescourtvegetarian.com/

Quality Hotel
www.qualityhotelmarlow.com.sg
Nearest MRT station: Novena
Rooms at SGD143-SGD990+
Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant is on the second level. A buffet meal here will set you back more than SGD20, though I read that a la carte is also available.
For a more budget choice, head to the hawker's some 10 minutes walk away (Whampoa Food Centre). Do note that most vegetarian hawker stalls close early (well before dinner time).
Also, note that this hotel is away from the city centre and Novena MRT station is about 15 to 20 minutes' walk away.

For other options, staying around Fortune Centre is fine.
Also, staying in Little India is fine if you don't mind Indian vegetarian (read: dairy!).

My Latest Obsession / Distraction - Manzenreiter

My com died! Long live my com!

After four years and two resets, Asu (my Asus N61JQ) died on me at last.
(My colleague managed to revive it, but that's another story.)

I walked into the electronics store with completely no idea what kind of computer to buy.

X hours later, I walked out of Funan with a large heavy bag, and SGD1.8k lighter.
(Actually, my sister's BF became my temporary mule =X)

The decision to get my ASUS G56JR was completely irrational.
He just looked good.
And the specs seemed to be decent. ↓

G56JR - CN273H
  • Intel Core i7-4700HQ Processor 6M Cache 2.4GHz (Up to 3.4GHz)
  • Windows 8.1
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M with 2GB GDDR5
  • 15.6" LED-backlit TFT LCD Display Resolution: FHD 1920 x 1080
  • 8GB & 1TB SATA
  • DVD SuperMulti Double Layer Drive
  • 2.7kg
  • 2 Years International (after free upgrade worth $129)
S$1,898

I just Ctrl C + Ctrl V -ed the specs I saw on the brochure my colleague showed me some days later.
The price is the same apparently, no matter where you go.

ASUS G56JR

The one thing I learnt is, NEVER REFUSE FREEBIES THAT COME WITH A GAMING COM.
It is a dumb move. ALL the freebies are cool.
I regretted not getting the bag (they said it was out of stock, and to please come back another day, and I was, like oh.. let me replace it with that product over there?).

Anyways, I love my mouse, headset, and subwoofer that I did bring back. XD
The mouse isn't the run-of-the-mill kind of mouse I was expecting (cos that was what I got for my previous Asus).

I'm showering so much attention on my beloved Manzenreiter (Manzy) these days (sorry FoW).
Don't ask me why I gave him a German name (stole it from one of my projects, by the way).
It just ... somehow befits his dark brooding demeanor and red back-lit keyboard. ♥♥♥

So... I somehow felt obliged to get Manzy a game, cos he's a gaming com.
Not that I'm much of a gamer... (I can tick off all the games I've played with my fingers.)

So... I bought and downloaded Child of Light.
So far so good, but Child of Light isn't what one might call a "graphics heavy" game.

So, maybe I'll post updates later if I get a "graphics heavy" game.

Ok, gotta go get dinner and watch a few episodes of VGHS~ Tata~

Dear Google...

Dear Google,

If you would make Android phones back up photos automatically, at least make the folder easy to delete!!! DAMMIT!!

Love,
Android_Fangirl

Disclaimer: I haven't updated my phone to KitKat. Is it any better?

Adobe CS5 on Windows 8.1

My Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium worked fine on my new Windows 8.1 com!!!

Hallelujah!!

My Asus G56JR sputtered and whirred very loudly when I popped the installation CD in and I was really worried I might have to subscribe to CS6 or cough-approachthepir@t3s-cough after all.

I encountered the following message:
"Adobe Installer - Installer has detected that a machine restart may be pending. It is recommended that you quit installer, restart and try again."

I clicked on the "Quit" button the first time.

After some Googling, I clicked "Ignore and Continue" as advised on this page: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/658141

I got my luverly Photoshop back and my com didn't explode.

Note: My previous com died before I could uninstall Adobe. I had no problems with the serial number on my new com.

PSoD [Pink Screen of Death]

I got the pink screen of death on my Windows 7 work com the other day.
It may or may not have been the latest PDF Creator update.
Whatever it was, my colleague fixed it with Spybot Search & Destroy.
